Guizhou's Village Events Go Global
Guizhou province gained attention for vibrant, rural-themed "village" events that blend culture, food, and tourism, now recognized on a global stage. These community-driven celebrations offer travelers hands-on participation in authentic cultural gatherings rather than typical tourist attractions. The events represent meaningful cultural immersion through local community engagement.
The "Village Super League," or "Cun Chao," in Rongjiang county is a prime example of these globally recognized events. What started in May 2023 has since attracted over 27.5 million visitors and generated 31.2 billion RMB in tourism-related income. The players are local villagers—from vendors and drivers to carpenters—representing various ethnic groups like the Miao, Dong, and Shui. This grassroots soccer tournament has captured international attention, with football legends like Michael Owen and Kaka expressing their support. The league has even fostered collaborations with the English Premier League for grassroots coach training. Looking ahead, there are plans to host a Village Super League "World Cup" in 2028, open to amateur teams from across the globe. Beyond sports, events like the "Village Runway Show" in Kaili have also gone viral, celebrating the traditional costumes of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups. This weekly fashion show, featuring locals of all ages from children to elders, has attracted over 400,000 visits and generated more than 200 million yuan in tourism revenue. The show's initiator, Yang Chunlin, was inspired after his 62-year-old mother drew more attention than professional models at London Craft Week. These events are part of a broader provincial strategy to transform local cultural activities into internationally recognized brands. Other popular events include the "Village BA" basketball tournament, a Village Marathon, and various cultural festivals celebrating local heritage. This model of community-driven tourism has been recognized by the United Nations Development Programme as an example of global poverty reduction.
