Fortnite Teases Surfing Pre-Game

Fortnite is teasing surfing sequences in pre-game lobbies along with new mobility items, melee weapons, refreshed loot pools, and mid-match objectives. The surfing addition suggests a major beach or ocean-themed update could be coming to the battle royale.

While a beach theme seems imminent, this wouldn't be the first time the battle royale island has been submerged. Chapter 2 Season 3, titled "Splashdown!", featured a map that was almost entirely flooded. As the season progressed, the water levels gradually receded, revealing new and altered points of interest. The "Splashdown!" season also introduced sharks as hostile NPCs that could be used for mobility by latching onto them with a fishing rod. This earlier season set a precedent for water-based traversal and combat, elements that could be significantly expanded upon with the introduction of surfing. Interestingly, the tease of a lighthearted beach theme contrasts sharply with persistent rumors about the upcoming season's direction. Many leaks and theories have pointed towards a post-apocalyptic or "Wrecked" theme for Chapter 5 Season 3. This has been fueled by official-looking teaser images and even a collaboration with the Fallout franchise. The introduction of new mobility mechanics is a constant in Fortnite's evolution. Past seasons have seen a wide array of items that change how players traverse the map, from the Kinetic Blade and ODM Gear to the Shockwave Hammer. Surfing would be the latest in a long line of experimental movement options designed to keep gameplay fresh. Pre-game lobbies have traditionally been a social space for players to emote and warm up before a match begins. While Epic Games has used this space for minor interactive elements and teasers in the past, a full-fledged surfing mechanic would represent a significant upgrade in pre-game interactivity. The potential for a water-themed season also opens the door for unique mid-match objectives. Previous seasons have tasked players with a variety of in-game goals to earn rewards and experience. Objectives related to surfing, swimming, or controlling specific water-based locations could be a logical extension of a beach theme. This potential seasonal theme follows Fortnite's established pattern of dramatic, map-altering changes between seasons. The game is known for using end-of-season live events to transition between themes, such as a meteor strike or a massive flood, which could explain a sudden shift to a beach paradise or a wasteland.
