Gemini moves toward agents
Google is testing an 'Agent' tab in Gemini Enterprise and has unlocked an 'Agent Mode' for Gemini 3.1 Pro that automates multi-step workflows across Workspace apps. (androidauthority.com)(tomsguide.com). Sundar Pichai also posted that a native Gemini desktop app for Mac is rolling out, showing the company is expanding Gemini into both agent surfaces and native clients. (x.com)
Google is turning Gemini from a chatbot into software that can carry out tasks across apps, inside both Workspace and a new Mac desktop app. (androidauthority.com) (workspaceupdates.googleblog.com) An unreleased Gemini Enterprise interface spotted by TestingCatalog adds an “Agent” tab and a “Tasks” dashboard with sections for Goals, Agents, Connected apps and Files. The same test build also shows an inbox and a “Require a human review” toggle for sensitive actions. (androidauthority.com) Google has already been shipping the model layer behind that push. On February 19, Google said Gemini 3.1 Pro was designed for “complex tasks,” was rolling out to Gemini Enterprise and Vertex Artificial Intelligence, and was being released in preview to advance “agentic workflows.” (blog.google) An agent is an artificial intelligence system that breaks a broad goal into smaller steps and then uses tools to finish them, instead of stopping after one answer. Google has been moving Gemini in that direction since at least December 2024, when DeepMind said Gemini 2.0’s native tool use would help build “new AI agents,” and again in November 2025, when Google launched an experimental Gemini Agent in the consumer app. (blog.google 1) (blog.google 2) Google has also been building agent software for work accounts, not just consumers. In December 2025, it launched Google Workspace Studio as a general-availability product for creating, managing and sharing agents inside Workspace, with examples that chained multiple specialized “Gems” to review ideas and draft user stories. (workspace.google.com) That makes the new Enterprise tab look less like a one-off experiment and more like a front end for tools Google has been assembling for months. The company said in November 2025 that the Gemini app had passed 650 million monthly users and that more than 70 percent of Google Cloud customers were using its artificial intelligence. (blog.google) Google is also pushing Gemini closer to the desktop. On April 15, Google said the Gemini app for Mac was now available, with a native macOS client, an Option + Space shortcut, screen sharing, file access and downloads for macOS 15 and newer. (blog.google) (support.google.com) For Workspace administrators, Google said the Mac app is on by default for organizations that already have Gemini enabled, and the same Generative Artificial Intelligence settings in the Admin console control access. End users sign in with a work or school Google account after downloading the app. (workspaceupdates.googleblog.com) Google has not publicly announced the tested Enterprise “Agent” tab as a shipping feature, and the Android Authority report is based on a leak rather than a product launch. But the pieces now line up: a stronger reasoning model, agent tools in Workspace, a tested agent dashboard for enterprise users, and a native client that keeps Gemini one keyboard shortcut away.
