Nike Honors Kobe's High School
Nike honors Kobe Bryant's legacy with a new sneaker release dedicated to his alma mater, Lower Merion High School. The commemorative drop is a nod to Kobe's roots and is sure to be a must-have for collectors and fans alike. The release continues Nike's tribute series honoring different aspects of Bryant's basketball journey.
The upcoming Nike Kobe 5 Protro "Lower Merion Aces Away" is a throwback to a 2010 classic, celebrating Kobe Bryant's formative years. The sneaker is decked out in the school's "away" colors, featuring a Metallic Silver upper with Team Red and white accents, a direct nod to the uniforms worn by the Aces. The design is complete with the spade-shaped "Aces" logo on the heel, a tribute to the school's mascot. The "Aces" moniker itself is a tribute to Lower Merion alumnus Henry H. Arnold, a five-star general in the U.S. Army and Air Force. While the school's official mascot is a bulldog, the "Aces" nickname is used by most of its sports teams, including the basketball team that rose to national prominence with Bryant. During his senior year in 1995-96, Bryant led the Lower Merion Aces to a 31-3 record and their first state championship in 53 years. That season, he averaged an astounding 30.8 points, 12 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4 steals, and 3.8 blocked shots per game. Bryant's performance made him a national sensation, earning him Naismith High School Player of the Year and McDonald's All-American honors. He concluded his high school career with 2,883 points, becoming the all-time leading scorer in Southeastern Pennsylvania history, surpassing the legendary Wilt Chamberlain. This release is part of Nike's "Protro" (performance retro) series, which reissues classic Kobe sneakers with modern technological upgrades, like enhanced Zoom Air cushioning and improved traction. The concept ensures the shoes are not just collector's items but are also suitable for today's on-court demands. In addition to the Kobe 5 Protro, Nike is also releasing a two-pack of Air Force 1s in "Home" and "Away" Lower Merion colorways, further expanding the tribute to Bryant's high school legacy. The demand for Kobe's signature sneakers has remained exceptionally high since his passing, with many releases selling out instantly and commanding high prices on the resale market. This sustained interest speaks to the enduring impact of his "Mamba Mentality" and his legacy in the world of sports and sneaker culture.
