BIEL Crystal Named Exclusive Glass Supplier for iPhone 17e

Apple has selected BIEL Crystal as the exclusive supplier of cover glass for its new budget-friendly iPhone 17e. The new phone will reportedly start at $599 and offer a base storage of 256GB.

This exclusive supply deal marks a significant step in the long-standing relationship between Apple and Hong Kong-based BIEL Crystal. The company has been a core supplier for iPhone cover glass since the very first model in 2007. This new agreement for the iPhone 17e follows their role as the exclusive cover glass supplier for the preceding iPhone 16e, signaling deepening trust in BIEL's manufacturing capabilities. The iPhone 17e's front cover will be made of Ceramic Shield 2, manufactured by BIEL and reinforced with their proprietary super-hard coating technology. This combination reportedly delivers three times the scratch resistance compared to the Ceramic Shield used in the iPhone 16e. This enhancement is crucial as Apple's Ceramic Shield, co-developed with Corning, is already known for its toughness, which is derived from embedding nano-ceramic crystals within the glass matrix to deflect cracks. BIEL Crystal is a manufacturing giant, operating 9 advanced production bases and boasting an annual capacity of over 2.2 billion pieces of glass. Beyond Apple, its client roster includes other major players like Samsung, Meta, and Tesla. The company has faced scrutiny in the past for its labor practices, leading to a public pledge in 2013 from its president to improve working conditions, including providing clear work contracts and ensuring a day off every seven days. The introduction of the "e" model line is a strategic move for Apple in markets like India. Apple has seen its market share in India climb from just 1% in 2019 to a record 9% in 2025. This growth is largely fueled by the "premiumisation" of the market, where consumers are increasingly opting for high-end devices, often facilitated by financing and trade-in offers. The iPhone 17e itself is rumored to feature a powerful A19 chip, the same processor expected in the standard iPhone 17 models. It is expected to maintain a 6.1-inch OLED display and a single-lens 48MP rear camera, but will see the addition of MagSafe charging for the first time in Apple's budget line. The new model addresses a key limitation of its predecessor by doubling the base storage to 256GB.
