130 Santa Clara Condo Residents Displaced

Approximately 130 residents of a condominium complex in Santa Clara have been displaced after the discovery of structural issues. The building is now undergoing evaluation and repairs to ensure it is safe, leaving residents to find temporary housing.

The displacement at the Villa Bella condominium complex at 1850 El Camino Real began on the evening of February 28, 2026, after the Santa Clara Fire Department received a call about displaced concrete. Fearing a potential collapse, approximately 60 people were initially evacuated from the 56-unit building. An assessment by structural engineers from the developer, the homeowners' association, and the city of Santa Clara determined that the building is not in imminent danger of collapse. However, shoring is required on the north side of the building before any of the 130 displaced residents can return. The City of Santa Clara has stated that the developer is responsible for the necessary construction and repairs. City officials have been in contact with the developer and have met with the homeowners' association and residents to discuss the next steps. This is not the first major incident at this location. In June 2019, a massive fire broke out at the same address while the condominium complex was under construction. The blaze was contained, and a person of interest was detained in connection with the fire at the time. The city opened its Community Recreation Center as a temporary shelter for the displaced residents, though most have found their own temporary accommodations. The American Red Cross is assisting the residents, and the city is working to identify a facility with showers as an alternative shelter location. For those needing longer-term assistance, Santa Clara County's Homelessness Prevention System (HPS) offers resources such as temporary financial assistance and legal support for low-income individuals and families at risk of losing their housing. Several local non-profits, including Sacred Heart Community Service, also provide financial aid and support for housing.
