Anthropic: scale and strain

Anthropic’s revenue growth has been described as extraordinary even as the company faced a Claude outage on April 13 and warnings that its new Mythos model could enable more sophisticated cyberattacks against legacy systems. Anthropic is expanding at a pace few private software companies have matched, even as Claude suffered an outage and its newest model raised cyber-risk alarms. (axios.com) Axios reported on April 13 that Anthropic’s organic revenue growth is unusually fast at unusually large scale, after earlier reporting in March that the company was capturing more than 73% of spending from businesses buying artificial intelligence tools for the first time, according to Ramp data. (axios.com 1) (axios.com 2) That growth is landing at the same time Anthropic is dealing with basic operating strain. Claude users reported service problems on April 13, and Anthropic’s status page later said the incident had been resolved. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) (status.anthropic.com) The bigger pressure point is Mythos, Anthropic’s new frontier model. Anthropic said in its April 7 system card that Mythos showed a large jump in capabilities and would not be made generally available, limiting it instead to a defensive cybersecurity program with a small set of partners. (anthropic.com) A frontier model is the company’s most advanced system, and Anthropic says Mythos is its strongest one yet. In the same system card, the company said the model produced a “striking leap” over Claude Opus 4.6 on many benchmarks and described it as a tool for cybersecurity testing under tighter controls. (anthropic.com) Reuters reported on April 13 that cybersecurity experts see special risk for banks because many still run legacy technology systems that are harder to patch and monitor. U.S. News, republishing the Reuters analysis, said Anthropic researchers had described Mythos as identifying “thousands” of high- and critical-severity vulnerabilities. (usnews.com) (srnnews.com) Anthropic and other artificial intelligence companies have been trying to turn chatbots into work software by connecting them to outside tools. On April 13, Aiwyn said it had joined Anthropic’s Claude Connector ecosystem so Claude users could call Aiwyn’s tax engine inside the chatbot. (prnewswire.com) (claude.com) Aiwyn said its connector can estimate federal and state taxes, use tax documents such as W-2 forms, and return a completed Form 1040 portable document format file. Anthropic’s connector listing says Aiwyn’s engine has filed more than 1 million returns. (prnewswire.com) (claude.com) The result is a company trying to do three things at once: keep Claude online for paying users, lock down a model it says is too capable for broad release, and push deeper into business workflows where reliability matters more than demos.
