Harvard Med Applicant Shares Research Strategy

In a recent video, a successful Harvard Medical School applicant advised pre-meds to join a research lab by their sophomore year to allow time for meaningful project contributions and potential co-authorships. The strategy includes leveraging Harvard's research offices and proactively cold-emailing Principal Investigators with a concise resume and genuine interest.

At the most competitive, research-focused medical schools, having research experience is a de facto requirement. For instance, a remarkable 99% of first-year students at Harvard Medical School have a background in research. This experience is valued as it demonstrates critical thinking, a commitment to advancing medical knowledge, and the ability to handle the rigorous demands of medical education. The time commitment to research for a competitive application can be substantial, often spanning multiple years. While there is no formal requirement for the number of hours, successful applicants to top-tier programs often report thousands of hours of deep, meaningful research. For most medical schools, a competitive range is between 400 and 800 total research hours. Medical schools value a wide array of research experiences, not limited to traditional bench science. Clinical research, which involves patients or their data, is seen as directly relevant to patient care. Additionally, public health, epidemiology, and even humanities research are increasingly valued for their focus on health systems and the social determinants of health. Achieving co-authorship on a publication requires a significant intellectual contribution to a research project. This can include involvement in developing the research question, designing the experiment, collecting and analyzing data, or writing the manuscript. Discussing the potential for co-authorship with a principal investigator early on is a reasonable step for a student who is a major contributor to a project.
