Amazon launches nationwide healthcare AI assistant

Amazon launched its Health AI assistant nationwide, offering triage for 30+ conditions and appointment booking.

The AI assistant is designed to provide personalized health insights by accessing a user's medical records, lab results, and medications. It can explain medical records, book appointments, and manage prescriptions. For instance, it can explain cholesterol test results or give advice for congestion, sore throat, or fatigue. Amazon's Health AI connects to the nationwide Health Information Exchange (HIE) with the user's consent. This allows the AI to ingest comprehensive medical histories, current medications, clinical notes, and lab results. It even considers relevant Amazon purchase history, like vitamins or blood pressure monitors, to provide context-aware triage. Eligible Prime members get up to five free direct-message consultations with a One Medical provider for over 30 common conditions. These conditions include colds, the flu, allergies, pink eye, and UTIs. Non-Prime users can access One Medical providers through a pay-per-visit option. Amazon has implemented safeguards, including a "large language model as a judge," to oversee the assistant and flag concerning responses. The tool will also direct customers to a provider if it's uncertain about a recommendation. Amazon says it trains the AI models on "abstracted patterns" rather than identifiable data.
