Patterson-Davis Novel Launches
"Judge Stone," a collaboration between James Patterson and Viola Davis, is officially on sale today. The 432-page novel published by Little, Brown and Company represents a rare literary partnership between the prolific thriller writer and the Oscar-winning actress.
The novel at the center of the partnership, "Judge Stone," tackles the contentious issue of abortion. The plot revolves around Judge Mary Stone, a respected Black female circuit judge in a small Alabama town, who must preside over the case of a doctor charged with performing an illegal abortion on a 13-year-old girl who was raped. The narrative delves into the moral and ethical complexities of the case, which threatens to divide the town and has significant personal and professional stakes for Judge Stone. The idea for the collaboration came from James Patterson himself, who reached out to Viola Davis after being impressed by her 2022 memoir, "Finding Me". Davis, in turn, has spoken about her long-held desire to be a writer, a dream she has had since she was nine years old. She drew from her own personal history as a survivor of sexual assault to bring emotional authenticity to the story's victim. This project marks Viola Davis's first work of adult fiction. Her previous literary work includes the critically acclaimed "Finding Me," which was an Oprah's Book Club pick and a New York Times bestseller. The audiobook version of her memoir earned her a Grammy Award, completing her prestigious EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status. She has also authored a children's book, "Corduroy Takes a Bow." James Patterson is one of the most prolific and commercially successful authors in history, having sold over 425 million copies of his books. He frequently works with co-authors, a practice he believes brings new and interesting ideas to his stories. His extensive list of previous collaborators includes notable figures such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton and music legend Dolly Parton. Fans of the novel can already look forward to a screen adaptation. James Patterson has teased that a movie version of "Judge Stone" is in the works, and that he and Davis would be discussing the book, the audiobook, and the movie at the launch event.
