Atlassian CTO exits amid AI pivot
Atlassian laid off 1,600 employees and their CTO left as the company shifts toward AI-led product development. "Next-gen AI talent" is stepping in, signaling a broader trend of prioritizing leaders with AI and distributed systems expertise. This highlights the growing pressure on tech leadership to adapt to rapid technological changes.
Atlassian's CTO, Rajeev Rajan, will step down on March 31, 2026, after nearly four years in the role, coinciding with the company's restructuring. Taroon Mandhana will become CTO for Teamwork products, while Vikram Rao will assume the role of CTO for Enterprise and Chief Trust Officer. These changes are viewed as aligning technical and financial leadership with the company's new AI focus. The restructuring involves approximately 1,600 job cuts, representing about 10% of Atlassian's global workforce. The company expects to incur $225 million to $236 million in charges related to the layoffs and office space reductions. Impacted employees will receive a minimum 16-week separation package, plus one additional week per year of service, a prorated FY26 bonus, a $1,000 technology payment, and six months of extended healthcare coverage. Atlassian's CEO, Mike Cannon-Brookes, stated that the company is not simply replacing people with AI, but that AI is changing the skills needed. The layoffs are intended to "self-fund further investment in AI and enterprise sales". The company is rebalancing resources to focus on the "future of teamwork in the AI era".
