OpenAI adds workspace agents

- OpenAI rolled out a ChatGPT agent mode and Codex-powered workspace agents that perform multi-step tasks and call tools for teams. - Workspace agents are replacing Custom GPTs and aim to manage tasks and workflows inside team environments. - The update nudges OpenAI toward embedded work orchestration for internal workflows and enterprise integrations, including a partner push in India with Infosys ( ).

OpenAI has turned ChatGPT into a shared workplace tool, rolling out workspace agents for teams on April 22. (openai.com) OpenAI said the new agents are powered by Codex, run in the cloud, and can handle multi-step jobs such as preparing reports, writing code, and replying to messages. The company said teams can use them inside ChatGPT and Slack, with access controlled by workplace permissions. (openai.com) The launch also changes OpenAI’s product lineup. Workspace agents are described as an evolution of GPTs, and 9to5Mac reported they replace Custom GPTs for team use. (openai.com, 9to5mac.com) OpenAI’s help documentation says workspace users can add skills, files, and custom Model Context Protocol servers, share agents by link or in a workspace directory, schedule recurring runs, and connect agents to Slack channels. The company said the feature is off by default at launch and is not available at launch for ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces with enterprise key management. (help.openai.com) A chatbot answers one prompt at a time. An agent is built to keep working across steps and tools, which is the model OpenAI introduced for individual users with ChatGPT agent in July 2025 and is now extending into shared workspaces. (openai.com, help.openai.com) The shift puts OpenAI closer to software that manages internal workflows, not just chats. OpenAI’s business page says workspace agents can work across Slack, Google Drive, Microsoft SharePoint, and other enterprise tools with admin controls and governance settings. (openai.com) The company is pairing that product push with services partners. Infosys said on April 22 that it will use OpenAI models and products including Codex with its Topaz platform to help clients with software development, modernization, and agentic artificial intelligence adoption. (infosys.com) TechCrunch reported the Infosys deal is aimed at getting OpenAI tools into more businesses, with an early focus on software engineering, legacy modernization, and DevOps. That gives OpenAI a large enterprise channel in India as it tries to move customers from pilots to broader deployments. (techcrunch.com, thetechportal.com) For now, OpenAI is selling a system that can be built once and reused by a team, with version history, analytics, and admin controls layered on top. The closer ChatGPT gets to shared workflows, the less it looks like a standalone assistant and the more it looks like workplace software. (help.openai.com, help.openai.com)
