OpenAI rolls out three education plugins

OpenAI said on August 4 that it added three education plugins to ChatGPT Work and Codex, expanding its push into schools and universities ahead of the new academic year. The company said the new tools are aimed separately at K–12 teachers, college educators and college students. OpenAI described a plugin as a package of apps, role-specific skills, instructions and workflows designed to help users start tasks without building long prompts from scratch. The company said the rollout is available through ChatGPT Edu and some ChatGPT for Teachers deployments. ### Which users get which plugin? ChatGPT Edu workspaces now have access to three guided plugins — College Educator, K–12 Educator and College Student — according to OpenAI’s release notes updated August 4. OpenAI said ChatGPT for Teachers workspaces managed through a district domain claim have access to the K–12 Educator plugin. The company said the plugins appear in the Plugin Directory and are not installed by default, with workspace administrators able to manage availability and permissions. The publication said they are not currently available in the mobile app, regular Chat or the Codex IDE extension. ### What are the tools supposed to do for teachers? The K–12 Educator plugin is designed to help teachers plan and create for their classrooms, OpenAI said. (help.openai.com) The company said the tool was developed alongside K–12 educators and can work with teachers’ existing materials and tools to create differentiated resources, design interactive visuals and surface insights. In separate release notes, OpenAI said the same plugin can help teachers create lesson materials, assignments, rubrics and instructional resources, with Learning Commons context for aligning materials to state standards and learning progressions. OpenAI said the broader set of tools can connect to documents, course materials, calendars and other approved apps so the system can work from the context users choose. The College Student plugin helps students use course materials and a study goal to get source-grounded explanations, guided practice, study plans, quizzes, flashcards and visual explanations, OpenAI said in its release notes. TechRepublic reported that OpenAI said students can also use the tool to create study guides and other materials from course content. (help.openai.com) Praja T., identified by TechRepublic as a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, said in OpenAI’s announcement that the College Student plugin made it easier to engage with course materials by creating quizzes, study guides and visualizations for exam preparation. ### How does this fit into OpenAI’s existing school products? OpenAI said the new plugins build on ChatGPT Edu, which it introduced in 2024 for universities, and ChatGPT for Teachers, which it launched in November 2025 for verified U.S. (help.openai.com) K–12 educators. The company said ChatGPT for Teachers is free through June 2027 for verified U.S. K–12 educators and includes education-grade privacy, security and compliance features.
