Aqara Unveils Versatile Matter Hub
The Connectivity Standards Alliance is spotlighting Aqara's new G410 hub, an all-in-one device for the smart home. It integrates a 2K video doorbell with a Zigbee hub, a Matter controller, and a Thread border router, aiming to simplify complex multi-protocol setups.
The G410's inclusion of a Thread border router is key for Matter's future, directly connecting low-power IoT devices to IP-based networks like Wi-Fi. This sidesteps the need for proprietary hubs, allowing devices from different manufacturers to communicate seamlessly on a single platform. The Thread protocol creates a self-healing mesh network that strengthens as more devices are added. This device significantly upgrades its predecessor, the G4, by incorporating a millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar for motion detection instead of the more common PIR sensors. This technology enhances accuracy by detecting micro-movements, reducing false alerts from shadows or pets. Local, on-device AI for facial recognition further increases privacy and responsiveness by processing data without relying on the cloud. The 2K video camera uses a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 175° wide-angle lens, providing a taller field of view to better capture people and packages at the doorstep. While Apple HomeKit currently limits streaming to 1080p, full 2K resolution is available exclusively through the Aqara Home app. The camera also features enhanced night vision with ten 940nm non-intrusive infrared lights. By combining a Zigbee hub with a Matter controller, the G410 acts as a bridge for existing smart home setups. This allows legacy Zigbee devices to be virtualized and appear on the Matter network, enabling unified control without needing to replace all existing hardware immediately. However, the Zigbee hub functionality is limited to controlling Aqara's own line of Zigbee products. Despite Matter's promise of unifying the smart home, fragmentation and limited device compatibility remain challenges. Many manufacturers are still heavily invested in their own ecosystems, and the rollout of Matter-ready devices has been slower than anticipated. The G410 addresses this by supporting multiple protocols, offering a transitional path for users invested in different smart home standards.
