US & Iran Enter Open Warfare
The U.S. is now in the fourth day of open warfare with Iran, shuttering or evacuating embassies across the Middle East. President Trump ordered "Operation Epic Fury" with a massive wave of air strikes, and is now warning of an "extended war" as allies like Sen. Marco Rubio promise the "hardest hits are yet to come."
The joint U.S.-Israeli offensive, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury" by the U.S. and "Operation Roaring Lion" by Israel, represents the largest concentration of American military firepower in the region since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The operation was initiated after weeks of escalating tensions, including widespread anti-government protests and a violent crackdown by the Iranian government. In the opening 48 hours, U.S. and Israeli forces struck over 1,250 targets across Iran, with the U.S. alone conducting 900 strikes in the first 12 hours. A primary objective of the initial assault was the decapitation of the Iranian leadership. A precision strike in Tehran killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with other senior military commanders. The strikes targeted a wide range of strategic assets, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) command and control centers, air defense systems, ballistic missile sites, and naval forces. The U.S. has deployed a formidable force to the region, including two aircraft carrier strike groups led by the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Gerald R. Ford. The air campaign involves a significant number of advanced aircraft, including F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters, B-2 stealth bombers flying from the U.S., and dozens of other strike and support aircraft. This has allowed for the establishment of air superiority over key areas, including Tehran. Iran has retaliated with a massive barrage of ballistic missiles and drones, targeting U.S. military bases and allied nations across the Middle East. Hundreds of projectiles have been launched at facilities in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. While many have been intercepted, the attacks have resulted in the first American casualties of the conflict, with 6 U.S. service members killed and 18 seriously wounded. The conflict has caused immediate and severe economic repercussions. Global oil prices have surged, with Brent crude jumping significantly amid fears of a prolonged disruption to the world's energy supply. Shipping through the critical Strait of Hormuz has been effectively halted, threatening about 20% of the world's oil supply and causing major disruptions to global trade. International reactions have been mixed. Key European allies like the UK, France, and Germany have expressed concern while noting Iran's destabilizing actions. China and Russia have condemned the U.S.-Israeli strikes as an "unprovoked act of aggression" and called for a return to diplomacy. The United Nations Secretary-General has condemned the use of force by all parties and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Domestically, the operation has seen broad support from Republican lawmakers, who have praised President Trump's decisive action against what they term a long-standing threat. However, some Democrats have raised concerns about the lack of congressional authorization for the military action, suggesting it could lead to another "endless war" in the Middle East.
