Tony Eligibility Decisions Set

The Tony Awards Administration Committee finalized eligibility for several Broadway shows including Carrie Coon in "Oedipus," plus productions "Chess" and "Bug." Robert Icke's modern-dress "Oedipus" adaptation is being credited as an original work rather than a classic Sophocles adaptation for Tony purposes. These rulings shape the competitive landscape for the 79th Tony Awards.

- The first-ever Broadway revival of the musical "Chess" features a new book by Danny Strong, making him eligible for "Best Book of a Musical." The production stars Aaron Tveit as Freddie Trumper, Lea Michele as Florence Vassy, and Nicholas Christopher as Anatoly Sergievsky. - Despite being a new adaptation by director Robert Icke, "Oedipus" will compete in the Best Revival of a Play category, and Icke will be considered the author. The production, which previously had a sold-out run on the West End, is described as a modern political thriller. - The production of Tracy Letts' "Bug" is also being considered a revival for Tony purposes. Its stars, Carrie Coon and Namir Smallwood, will be eligible in the categories of Best Performance by an Actress/Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, respectively. - The Broadway premiere of "Bug," presented by the Manhattan Theatre Club, is a Steppenwolf Theatre Company staging directed by Tony winner David Cromer. The play is a psychological thriller set in an Oklahoma motel room. - The musical "Chess," with music by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and lyrics by Tim Rice, opened at the Imperial Theatre on November 16, 2025, and has extended its run through June 14, 2026. A Broadway cast album is also set to be recorded. - Nominations for the 79th Annual Tony Awards are scheduled to be announced on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. The awards ceremony will then take place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Radio City Music Hall.
