GSMA Launches 'Open Telco AI' Initiative
The GSMA, the global mobile industry association, has launched a new initiative called "Open Telco AI." Backed by major carriers, the project aims to create open standards to speed up the adoption of AI in communications networks for smarter, more resilient global connectivity.
The initiative directly addresses the underperformance of general-purpose AI, which often struggles to interpret complex network data and technical standards. This performance gap is significant, with one GSMA Intelligence study noting that only 16% of generative AI deployments in the telecom sector have been applied to network operations. AT&T and AMD are key founding supporters of the project. AT&T is contributing a family of open telco-specific AI models trained on public data, while AMD is providing the necessary high-performance GPU computing power for training and testing through its platforms and cloud partner TensorWave. The collaboration extends globally, involving a wide range of operators, tech vendors, and academic institutions. Notable contributing partners include Huawei, KDDI, Nvidia, Orange, SK Telecom, Swisscom, and Vodafone, with support from others like China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Google Cloud, and Telefónica. A core component of the initiative is a new portal, GSMA.com/open-telco-ai, which will provide access to the open models and datasets. To measure the effectiveness of these new tools, progress will be tracked through a new benchmark called the Telco Capability Index, which assesses model performance on a range of telecom-specific tasks.
