Akash Systems Unveils Diamond-Cooled AI Servers

Akash Systems announced what it claims are the world's first diamond-cooled AI servers, featuring AMD's Instinct MI350X GPUs. The company says its breakthrough cooling technology creates more energy- and capital-efficient servers, a critical innovation as AI data center power demands soar.

The core technology from Akash Systems isn't new; it's an evolution of GaN-on-Diamond material, which co-founder and CEO Felix Ejeckam invented in 2003. This material bonds Gallium Nitride (GaN), a high-performance semiconductor, to a synthetic diamond substrate, leveraging diamond's exceptional thermal conductivity. The primary innovation is efficiently pulling heat away from the active regions of the electronics. Initially, the company, founded in 2016 by Ejeckam and Ty Mitchell, focused this technology on the satellite communications market. Their aim was to create smaller, lighter, and more powerful radio frequency (RF) amplifiers and radios for satellites, where heat dissipation is a critical challenge in a vacuum. This space-tested heritage provides significant credibility for their pivot to terrestrial data centers. The move into AI servers is a direct response to the massive energy consumption and heat generation of modern GPUs. Diamond is the most thermally conductive material known, transferring heat about five times faster than copper. Akash's solution acts as an additional cooling layer, complementing existing air and liquid cooling systems to reduce GPU hotspot temperatures by a significant 10°-20°C. This improved thermal management allows GPUs to operate at peak performance without throttling, potentially boosting compute by up to 15% and enabling up to 25% overclocking. For data centers, this translates to better energy efficiency (PUE), longer server lifetimes, and increased computational density, which are critical metrics as AI workloads intensify. Akash Systems has already secured a significant foothold in the Indian market, delivering its first diamond-cooled NVIDIA GPU servers to NxtGen, a large Indian cloud provider. This partnership with NxtGen aims to build a more performant and cost-effective cloud backbone to support India's growing AI ecosystem. Financially, Akash is backed by prominent venture capital firms including Khosla Ventures and Founders Fund, having raised a total of $83.6M. The company has also received a $300 million initial order for its new servers and was approved for up to $68 million in funding under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, signaling strong government and market confidence in its technology.
