Trump Demands Iran Surrender
President Trump posted on Truth Social demanding Iran's "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER" and insisted on involvement in selecting their next leader, calling Khamenei's son "unacceptable." Trump also joined Christian leaders for Oval Office prayer while the White House says the US will control Iranian airspace in six weeks.
The demand for "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER" follows a significant escalation in the conflict, which began with a joint US-Israeli military operation against Iran. This operation, codenamed "Epic Fury," has involved strikes on numerous targets within Iran and resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Trump administration has stated the goal is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to eliminate threats from the Iranian regime. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that U.S. and Israeli forces expect to have "complete control" of Iranian airspace in under a week, a move intended to find and destroy Iran's missile and defense industrial base. This follows a series of strikes that have reportedly already hit over 1,700 targets in Iran since the operation began. The U.S. has also repositioned aircraft carrier strike groups and advanced fighter aircraft to the Middle East. The succession of leadership in Iran is a critical point of contention. Trump has explicitly stated his intent to be involved in selecting the next leader. Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Supreme Leader, is considered the frontrunner to succeed his father, reportedly with the backing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, his potential rise is met with some opposition within Iran, with concerns about a "hereditary leadership." Mojtaba Khamenei is a figure who has operated largely behind the scenes, cultivating deep ties with the IRGC and the security establishment. He has never held elected office but was previously sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2019 for his role in repressing protests. His ascent to power would likely signal a continuation of his father's hardline anti-Western policies. The international response to the conflict has been mixed. While some allies have been supportive, leaders from several European nations, including Spain and Finland, have criticized the unilateral military action and called for de-escalation and a return to international law. Meanwhile, Russia and China are reportedly providing political and other forms of assistance to Iran. Iran's military capabilities have been significantly targeted. While the country has a large and diverse missile arsenal, recent strikes have reportedly destroyed a substantial number of launchers, which are a key bottleneck for their offensive capacity. Before the latest conflict, Iran was estimated to have the largest active-duty military in the Middle East with approximately 610,000 personnel. This recent military action marks a departure from the "maximum pressure" campaign of Trump's first term, which focused on crippling economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation after the U.S. withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal. That campaign severely damaged Iran's economy but did not lead to a new negotiated agreement. President Trump has clarified that an "unconditional surrender" could mean a formal declaration from Iran, or it could be when they are no longer able to fight. This stance comes as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has mentioned that some unspecified countries have begun mediation efforts to end the conflict.
