Expo Chicago Snapshot

Expo Chicago ran April 9–12 at Navy Pier with 170 galleries from 36 countries and a mix of concerts, films, and dance embedded in the fair programming. Expo Chicago closed Sunday, April 12, after a four-day run at Navy Pier that paired the fair’s booths with talks, installations, film, video and performative work. (expochicago.com) (timeout.com) The 2026 edition ran April 9 through April 12 at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, where the fair said it would present more than 130 galleries in its 13th edition. Frieze, which acquired Expo Chicago in 2023, now operates the fair. (expochicago.com) (artfacts.net) Programming extended beyond gallery booths. Expo’s official lineup included the /Dialogues talks program, the Directors Summit, the Curatorial Exchange, Special Projects, IN/SITU installations, and OVERRIDE, a citywide billboard project with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (expochicago.com) That structure reflects how art fairs now compete with museums and biennials as much as with other sales events. Expo’s organizers said the 2026 edition was built around “curatorial depth” and a more focused floor plan under director Kate Sierzputowski and curator Essence Harden. (press.frieze.com) (chicago.suntimes.com) The fair also tied itself to a major Chicago institution still in development. Frieze said “Embodiment,” curated by Obama Presidential Center Museum founding director Louise Bernard, was designed as an early preview before the center’s public opening on June 19, 2026. (press.frieze.com) One example of the fair’s multi-format approach came in the Focus section, where Sibyl Gallery presented a new installation by Brooklyn textile artist Sarah Nsikak. Frieze described Nsikak’s presentation as an immersive textile installation, and Sibyl Gallery listed the project under the title “How could you hold it?” for April 9 through April 12. (press.frieze.com) (sibylgallery.com) Chicago’s role in the fair remains central even as its ownership and scale have shifted. The Sun-Times reported that this year’s fair was smaller than recent editions and that nonprofit exhibitors were cut from the floor plan, a change some local art figures called “controversial.” (chicago.suntimes.com) Expo Chicago began in 2012 as a successor to Art Chicago, the fair that ran from 1980 to 2011. This year’s edition kept the lakefront setting and the international pitch, but the emphasis was on a tighter event footprint and more curated programming. (artfacts.net) (chicago.suntimes.com) For visitors walking Navy Pier this week, the fair was not just rows of booths. It was a sales event, a public program, and a test of what Expo Chicago looks like in its first full spring under new leadership. (expochicago.com) (press.frieze.com)
