London Underground Celebrates Art

The London Underground is spotlighting its vibrant tradition of public art with an updated map encouraging riders to discover iconic and contemporary artworks. The campaign includes pop-up talks and tours, with highlights like Rudy Loewe's "The Congregation" mural at Brixton Station.

The tradition of public art on the London Underground dates back to the early 20th century under the leadership of Frank Pick. As Managing Director, Pick commissioned posters from leading artists and designers to shape the Underground's brand, turning the transport network into a vast public art gallery. This foundational vision established a legacy of integrating high-quality art and design into the daily commute of millions. The formal "Art on the Underground" program, originally called Platform for Art, was established in 2000. It began with installations on a disused platform at Gloucester Road station and has since expanded to include both temporary and permanent commissions across the entire network. The program commissions everything from prints and station murals to custom covers for the iconic Tube map, one of the largest public art commissions in the UK. Rudy Loewe’s mural "The Congregation" is the ninth in a series of commissions for Brixton station. Unveiled in November 2025 and on display for a year, the work comprises 20 scenes that celebrate Brixton's history as a center for London's Black communities. The piece depicts the arrival of the Windrush Generation, activist Marcia Rigg, and the Black lesbian-run sound system SisterMatic, weaving together stories from archival research and interviews. Beyond Brixton, the updated 2026 Art Map guides riders to 26 permanent artworks across the Tube network. These include Mark Wallinger's "Labyrinth" series, a unique maze design installed in all 270 stations to mark the Tube's 150th anniversary, and Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings' "Angels of History," a mosaic at St. James's Park station.
