USATF Half Marathon Gets Prize Fix

The incident unfolded at the 2026 USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta, where the top three female runners were led off course by a pace vehicle with less than two miles remaining in the race. This misdirection cost the leaders approximately two minutes and added about half a mile to their run. The error was triggered when a police officer assigned to the race was struck by a car near an intersection on the course just 13 minutes before the lead women arrived. Responding officers left key intersections unattended, leading to confusion and the lead vehicle driver following a police motorcycle off the established route, believing the course was being rerouted. Jess McClain, who was leading the race, ultimately finished 9th. Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat, who were running together in second and third, finished 12th and 13th, respectively. The unexpected winner was Molly Born, who was in fifth place before the lead runners were misdirected. In response to the error, the Atlanta Track Club, the race organizer, has offered to pay the affected athletes the prize money equivalent to their positions before the wrong turn. McClain will receive the first-place prize of $20,000, while Hurley and Kurgat will split the combined second and third-place prize money, receiving $9,750 each. While an appeal to alter the official order of finish was denied by USATF based on their rulebook, the organization has stated it will review the events carefully.
