Turn-Based Strategy Games Surge

Steam is seeing a wave of new turn-based strategy titles including Cold War Battles, WH40K: Rogue Trader DLC, and Bane: Dawn of the Lost. RPG fans are also anticipating upcoming turn-based gems like Front Mission 3 Remake and Prophecy of Ashen. Pulsar Rift's space strategy RPG alpha is nearing release.

The turn-based strategy market is projected to grow to $7.6 billion in 2026 and is forecast to reach $20.4 billion by 2036, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 10.4%. This growth is partly driven by a player base that grew up with franchises like X-COM and Civilization and now seeks more complex gaming experiences. This resurgence is not just based on nostalgia; developers are introducing innovative mechanics. Some contemporary titles are blending traditional turn-based systems with real-time actions like parrying and dodging, creating hybrid combat systems that add a new layer of depth. This addresses common criticisms of older games while retaining the thoughtful pacing that defines the genre. The upcoming *Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader - The Infinite Museion* DLC will introduce a new Necron-focused storyline where players will explore a vault belonging to Trazyn the Infinite. It will also add a new companion with a unique combat style, a new "Implants" mechanic, and additional quests. *Front Mission 3 Remake* is slated for a January 30, 2026 release on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles. This version of the tactical RPG will feature updated graphics, a reorchestrated soundtrack, and a new "Quick Combat Mode" to speed up battles. *Cold War Battles*, a hex-and-counter wargame from Kudos Games, is planned for a Q3 2026 release. The game will feature both historical and hypothetical conflicts from the 1945-1990 era, with over 200 different units. *Prophecy of Ashen* is a dark fantasy tactical RPG where player choices are intended to reshape the world of Rattalan. The gameplay focuses on utilizing terrain and magic in tactical turn-based combat, with a narrative that forces players to make difficult decisions between factions with blurred lines of morality. *Bane: Dawn of the Lost* is a procedurally generated fantasy adventure with a focus on exploration and survival. The game features a permadeath system and a combat model where characters have no hit-points, instead losing defense before sustaining injuries. It is planned to enter Early Access in 2026. Pulsar Rift is a space strategy RPG that combines real-time combat with turn-based card battles. The alpha version is nearing release, promising a blend of two distinct strategy formats within a single title.
