Design→Code Handoff

Anthropic’s new Claude Design aims to turn a mockup into working software by sending finished layouts straight to Claude Code for implementation. (anthropic.com) Anthropic launched Claude Design on April 17, 2026 as an Anthropic Labs research preview for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. The company said the tool creates prototypes, slides, one-pagers, and other visual assets through a chat interface. (anthropic.com) Anthropic said Claude Design is powered by Claude Opus 4.7, which it released a day earlier, on April 16, 2026. In that announcement, the company said Opus 4.7 improved advanced software engineering and vision tasks and was better at producing interfaces, slides, and documents. (anthropic.com) The handoff pitch is simple: a product manager or designer can sketch a feature flow, refine it in chat, and then pass that work to Claude Code instead of rewriting the idea for engineers in a separate document. Anthropic said teams can also export work as PowerPoint PPTX files, PDFs, Canva files, shareable links, and standalone HTML. (anthropic.com; computingforgeeks.com) Anthropic is also pitching Claude Design as a brand system tool, not just a mockup generator. The company said that during onboarding it can build a design system by reading a team’s codebase and design files, then apply those colors, typography, and components automatically to later projects. (anthropic.com) That matters in the part of software work where designs often stall between approval and implementation. Anthropic’s demos on X showed Claude Design generating branded layouts and then handing production work to Claude Code, which is the company’s coding product for developers. (x.com; x.com) The product also reflects how AI companies are moving beyond chatbots into workflow software that connects planning, design, and coding in one system. Anthropic said users can start from a text prompt, uploaded files including DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX, or a connected codebase, then refine the result with inline comments and direct edits. (anthropic.com) Early coverage framed Claude Design as a direct challenge to design and presentation tools that stop short of code handoff. 9to5Mac reported the launch after two earlier Anthropic design announcements that week, and ComputingForGeeks’ launch-day test said the output was an editable HTML document rather than a static image. (9to5mac.com; computingforgeeks.com) Anthropic has not said when Claude Design will leave research preview. For now, the company is selling a shorter path from prompt to branded prototype to deployable user interface, with Claude handling more of the work between each step. (anthropic.com; anthropic.com)
