Bristol Light Festival Transforms City

The sixth annual Bristol Light Festival is currently underway, transforming the city's streets with immersive light installations from local and international artists. The event features interactive displays, including inflatable sculptures and musical swings, aiming to drive winter tourism and creative engagement.

- The event is organized and founded by the Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) with the explicit goal of re-energising the city centre during a traditionally quiet period for local businesses. - In 2024, the festival attracted 275,000 visitors and generated a £10.4 million economic boost for the city, with £8.7 million of that spending occurring as a direct result of the event. - The festival is curated by Creative Director Katherine Jewkes, who focuses on commissioning a mix of international artists and local talent, and often incorporates themes that are uniquely Bristolian, such as the city's drum and bass legacy. - Past installations have included a world premiere from immersive artists Studio McGuire called 'Ascendance', which featured an astronaut floating in a galaxy, and the popular interactive 'Swing Song', where the music changes as participants swing higher. - For every pound spent on producing the 2024 festival, £25.77 was generated for the local economy, and spending on overnight accommodation saw a 100% increase compared to the previous year. - The upcoming 2026 festival will expand its programming with two new strands: "BLF Events," a schedule of bookable performances and workshops, and "BLF Plus," which includes illuminated landmarks and displays across the city. - A key partner for the 2026 event is the charity St Peter's Hospice, which will present a special event called 'Moments of Light' to celebrate care, community, and remembrance.
