British Columbia Surveys Tourism on Climate Adaptation
Destination BC has launched a survey to assess how tourism businesses in the province are adapting to climate change and advancing sustainability. The initiative aims to gather data on climate preparedness and green investments to support the region's long-term viability as an adventure and eco-tourism destination.
- This is the second consecutive year for the survey, which aims to build on baseline data collected in 2025. The initial survey found that 87% of tourism businesses were concerned about the impacts of climate change, and 22% had to close for at least one day in 2024 due to a natural hazard. - The survey is a key component of the BC Tourism Climate Resiliency Initiative (BCTCRI), a collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, Destination BC, Indigenous Tourism BC, and the six Regional Destination Management Organizations. - The BCTCRI was a two-year pilot project backed by a $3.3 million investment from the provincial government's Destination Development Fund to help the tourism sector prepare for and adapt to climate change. - Beyond the survey, the BCTCRI has provided tourism businesses with one-on-one support to develop sustainability and climate adaptation plans, with nearly 400 businesses participating in the program. - The initiative has also offered micro-grants of up to $15,000 to help tourism businesses and non-profits implement projects or obtain sustainability certifications based on their adaptation plans. - British Columbia's tourism sector is particularly vulnerable to climate change, facing increasing risks from extreme weather events like wildfires, floods, and droughts, which cost the province an estimated $17 billion in 2021. - Data from the survey will inform a provincial report and region-specific reporting to help track progress and guide future planning for a more resilient visitor economy. - The survey is open to a wide range of operators, including accommodations, food and beverage providers, transportation services, and attractions, and takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.
