University of Tampa Plans Housing Tower

The University of Tampa seeks approval for an 11-story student housing tower, which could seed demand for nearby multifamily and luxury housing.

The proposed tower, designed to house 840 students, faces a crucial Tampa City Council hearing today. Approval would allow the project to proceed to permitting and detailed site planning. UT's enrollment has surged to a record 11,500 students in the 2025-26 academic year, fueling the need for more on-campus housing. The university views the new beds as a way to enhance student life and alleviate pressure on the local rental market. Demand for student housing is high in Tampa, with the University of South Florida also experiencing full capacity in its dorms. The tower is planned for 110 S. Boulevard, a site previously approved for a private student housing high-rise. UT's version is a scaled-back, institutionally owned concept. This project continues UT's campus expansion, following a 2022 plan for a 10-story residence hall. The council's decision will be closely watched by developers and students as a gauge of campus-area housing growth. Feedback from planning staff, council members, and residents is expected before land-use approvals are granted.
