Google will open its I/O developer conference on May 19 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, with the event running through May 20 and streaming online, according to the company’s event page. Google said the conference will feature keynote addresses, product demos and updates “from Gemini to Android and more,” setting up a showcase that spans phones, cars and extended-reality devices. (blog.google) (9to5google.com) May 12 brought an early look at part of that agenda. Google used its Android Show: I/O Edition to preview updates across the Android ecosystem, including Gemini Intelligence, Android Auto changes and new Android features, according to Google’s Android announcements page and company blog listings for the event. (blog.google) PCMag reported on May 13 that Google I/O is expected to focus on Gemini and Android XR, and said the company could also debut an Android-based desktop operating system at the conference. That report framed the May 19 event as broader than a single-model AI launch, with Android software and device interfaces likely to share the stage. (blog.google) Android Auto is one of the clearest examples of what Google has already put on the table. Google announced this week that Android Auto will add support for video apps starting with apps such as YouTube later this year in supported cars, with playback limited to when the vehicle is parked and a switch to audio-only when the car moves. (android.com) Google also said the feature will begin with vehicles from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata and Volvo. Home-screen widgets are also coming to Android Auto. Google’s Android announcements page and reports that tracked the Android Show said drivers will be able to place widgets for weather, smart-home controls and favorite contacts on the car display, while a Material 3 Expressive redesign is intended to adapt the interface to different screen sizes and shapes. (ca.pcmag.com) Gemini remains central to Google’s messaging before I/O. Google said in a May 12 post that Gemini Intelligence is coming to Android devices with more proactive features, and the company has separately said Gemini is planned for watches, cars, TVs and Android XR devices. (9to5google.com) In cars, Google has said Gemini features for Android Auto are due later this year, with capabilities meant to understand context and carry out tasks on a user’s behalf. Android XR is also positioned for another update cycle. Google introduced Android XR in late 2024 as an operating system for headsets and glasses built with Samsung, and in 2025 the company demonstrated how Gemini would work on XR headsets and glasses. (androidauthority.com) Pre-I/O coverage from PCMag and other outlets has pointed to smart glasses as one of the expected themes for the May 19 conference. The next public milestone is May 19. Google says anyone can watch the I/O 2026 keynotes and sessions online at io.google, while registered users can receive schedules, updates and on-demand technical content as the two-day event begins in Mountain View.
