Staff Engineers Out-Earning Managers

Staff engineers are often out-earning managers amid rapid tech changes, with advice pointing toward the IC track unless you're genuinely passionate about leading people. The traditional career ladder assumption — that management equals more money — is breaking down in favor of deep technical expertise.

The rise of dual-track career paths in tech allows senior individual contributors (ICs) to advance without moving into management. Companies are increasingly creating parallel ladders where roles like Principal or Distinguished Engineer are recognized as leadership positions, focusing on technical depth over people management. This structure helps retain top technical talent who might otherwise leave for companies that better value their expertise. Compensation for Staff Engineers can be comparable to, and sometimes exceed, that of Engineering Managers. At many companies, the pay bands for a Staff Engineer align with those of an Engineering Manager, while a Principal Engineer's compensation may be on par with a Senior Engineering Manager. This parity reflects a shift in valuing deep technical contributions as highly as management responsibilities. The demand for senior technical experts is growing as software systems become more complex. Companies need seasoned engineers to handle intricate architectural decisions and guide long-term technical strategy. This has led to a willingness to offer competitive compensation to keep these valuable contributors on a technical track. This trend is also influenced by a desire among experienced professionals for better work-life balance and a focus on hands-on work. A 2023 McKinsey & Company survey found that 34% of senior managers were interested in transitioning to individual contributor roles. The shift allows them to leverage their expertise without the administrative and people-management burdens.
