Chinese Artist Transforms Old Clothes
Chinese sculpture artist Yin Xiuzhen uses old clothes and everyday materials to create installations about personal memory and social change. - Yin Xiuzhen, born in Beijing in 1963, originally trained as an oil painter but shifted her focus to installation art after being influenced by the '85 New Wave, an experimental art movement in China. - An early and notable work addressing environmental issues was her 1995 performance piece, "Washing the River." For this, she froze ten cubic meters of polluted river water in Chengdu and invited the public to wash the ice blocks until they melted, raising awareness of water pollution. - In addition to clothing, Yin has incorporated other salvaged materials into her large-scale installations, including discarded roof tiles from demolished buildings in "Ruined City" (1996) and a disused minivan in "Collective Subconscious" (2007). - The artist refers to used clothing as a "second skin" that holds the experiences and memories of its former owners.
