It takes off vertically, then shifts into fixed-wing flight for better endurance. Petrel has been pitching it as a modular aircraft for surveillance, logistics, and strike missions, basically an “aerial pickup truck” that can work from rough ground without a runway. ### What happened in the Army test? Petrel’s role in the later coverage is the bigger news: the company says the aircraft released multiple armed FPV drones during a live-fire exercise, turning the platform from a scout into an airborne carrier for expendable strike drones. ### Why launch FPVs from the air? Because range is the whole game. A ground-launched FPV has to spend battery, signal margin, and time just getting to the target area. If a larger aircraft ferries it most of the way, the FPV can save its short endurance for the actual hunt and attack. That also pushes the human team farther back from artillery, observation, and counter-drone fire. ### Why is that a big tactical shift? It changes the launch point. That sounds small, but turns out it’s the whole trick. Instead of a soldier standing near the front with goggles and antennas, the launch point moves into the sky.
