Cameron Young’s 7-under 65 on Saturday wiped out Rory McIlroy’s six-shot lead and sent the 2026 Masters into Sunday with both men tied at 11-under par. (espn.com) Young started the third round eight shots back and posted 205 through 54 holes after rounds of 73, 67 and 65 at Augusta National. McIlroy followed his 67 and 65 with a 1-over 73 to fall back into a share of the lead. (espn.com) The leaderboard tightened behind them, too. Sam Burns stood alone in third at 10-under, Shane Lowry was fourth at 9-under, and Jason Day and Justin Rose were tied for fifth at 8-under after 54 holes. (espn.com) McIlroy had taken a record six-shot 36-hole lead into Saturday, the largest halfway advantage in Masters history, before a double bogey at the 11th and a bogey at the 12th opened the door. He said afterward, “I didn’t quite have it today,” after the cushion disappeared over the back nine. (sports.yahoo.com) (golfchannel.com) Young’s round changed the shape of the tournament because he had spent the first two days chasing after an opening 73, then moved into position with a 67 on Friday before the 65 on Saturday. The PGA Tour said he erased the deficit by “simply executing time after time” rather than forcing shots at pins. (pgatour.com) The final pairing reflects that reset. Young and McIlroy were scheduled to tee off together in the last group on Sunday, April 12, with 18 holes left to decide the green jacket. (pgatour.com) (golfchannel.com) For McIlroy, the stakes did not disappear with the stumble. Golf Channel reported he entered Sunday still trying to become only the fourth player to win the Masters in consecutive years. (golfchannel.com) For Young, Sunday is a chance to turn a charge into his first major championship. By Saturday night, Augusta had gone from a McIlroy runaway to a two-man race at the top, with Burns one shot back and the rest of the board close enough to matter. (nbcsports.com)
