Tata Motors starts deliveries of Prima E.55S trucks
Tata Motors has begun delivering Prima E.55S electric trucks to BillionE Mobility and has secured an additional order, signalling early commercial rollout in heavy-duty EVs. The deliveries point to growing commercial-vehicle electrification activity that will affect component requirements and validation timelines for suppliers (themachinemaker.com).
Tata Motors began handing over Prima E.55S electric heavy trucks to BillionE Mobility on April 10 and said it also won an order for 250 more. BillionE Mobility said the vehicles are aimed at inter-city freight operations. The Prima E.55S has a 55,000-kilogram gross vehicle weight rating, a 453-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack and a claimed range of up to 350 kilometers. The company also says the truck can fast-charge in as little as 1.5 hours with dual-gun Combined Charging System 2 charging. On October 9, 2025, the company said it had started deliveries of Prima E.55S electric prime movers to Enviiiro Wheels Mobility for freight in the power, mining, cement and steel sectors. (trucks.tatamotors.com) The April 2026 handover shows the truck moving from pilot-style deployments toward repeat orders and corridor-based use. BillionE Mobility said it is planning deployments over the next 6 to 18 months and is targeting 1,500 heavy-duty logistics units in India. (cv.tatamotors.com) Tata has been widening its electric commercial-vehicle lineup beyond city delivery vans and light trucks. Its commercial-vehicle site lists the Prima E.55S alongside smaller battery-electric trucks such as the Ultra E.7, Ultra E.9 and Ultra E.12, and the company highlighted the heavy truck in its 2025 product showcase. (trucks.tatamotors.com, trucks.tatamotors.com) For suppliers, the shift from diesel heavy trucks to battery-electric tractors changes the parts list and the testing calendar. Tata says the Prima E.55S adds battery management software, advanced driver-assistance features, high-voltage charging hardware and an electric axle, all of which require different validation than a conventional diesel driveline. (trucks.tatamotors.com) Rajesh Kaul, Tata Motors’ vice president and business head for trucks, said the company built the truck around “duty cycles, uptime, energy efficiency and total cost of ownership.” The next test is whether phased deliveries turn into regular long-haul utilization on the routes Tata and BillionE have mapped out.
