Sticker shock at NY Auto Show

A video highlighted in the briefing argued that soaring car prices at the New York Auto Show are putting ownership out of reach for many, framing affordability as the event’s recurring theme. (youtube.com) Additional show coverage in the briefing also noted that SUVs and EVs dominated the floor, reinforcing the price‑and‑product mix picture. (theapopkavoice.com)

At the 2026 New York International Auto Show, the biggest theme on the floor was simple: many of the newest vehicles are getting harder to afford. (autoshowny.com) The show ran from April 3 through April 12 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, with more than 750 vehicles from more than 30 brands and more than 35 manufacturers exhibiting, according to organizers. (autoshowny.com 1) (autoshowny.com 2) National pricing data moved in the same direction as the show floor. Kelley Blue Book said the average new-vehicle transaction price hit $49,275 in March 2026, while the average sticker price was $51,456 for the 12th straight month above $50,000. (coxautoinc.com) Cox Automotive said part of that increase came from a richer sales mix of full-size sport utility vehicles and pickups, while compact and subcompact cars lost share. March transaction prices for midsize sport utility vehicles averaged $49,853, and compact sport utility vehicles averaged $37,055. (coxautoinc.com) That same product mix showed up in New York. The show’s official preview highlighted global premieres ranging from compact electric sport utility vehicles to three-row family vehicles, and the exhibition roster centered on sport utility vehicles, trucks, electric vehicle test tracks, and off-road displays. (autoshowny.com 1) (autoshowny.com 2) Subaru used the show to unveil the 2027 Subaru Getaway, a three-row electric sport utility vehicle with 420 horsepower, more than 300 miles of range, and seating for up to seven. Hyundai’s surprise Boulder Concept was another sport utility vehicle, built around a body-on-frame layout aimed at towing, hauling, and off-road use. (media.subaru.com) (autoshowny.com) Kia also brought an electric sport utility vehicle pitched as an entry point. The company said the 2027 Kia EV3 made its North American debut in New York as “the most attainable model” in its electric lineup. (autoshowny.com) Buyers are stretching harder to keep up. Edmunds said the average amount financed on a new vehicle reached a record $43,899 in the first quarter of 2026, the average monthly payment rose to a record $773, and 22.9% of financed new-car deals ran 84 months or longer. (edmunds.com) Edmunds also said 20% of financed new-vehicle purchases in the first quarter carried payments of $1,000 or more, while the average down payment fell to $6,206. Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds’ head of insights, said buyers are “getting creative” to keep purchases within reach. (edmunds.com) Show organizers leaned into that pressure by marketing the event as a place to compare trims, features, and budgets before visiting a dealer. At a show packed with sport utility vehicles, electric models, and test tracks, the most practical pitch was still finding a car payment that fits. (autoshowny.com)
