Cinequest Film Festival Underway in Downtown San Jose

The Cinequest 2026 film and creativity festival is currently running in downtown San Jose. The event, which began on February 11th, will continue through the end of the month. It features a wide variety of film screenings and special events aimed at showcasing independent and innovative works.

- Founded in 1990 by Halfdan Hussey and Kathleen Powell, the festival's first event showed 60 films at a single theater and drew 3,000 people; it has since grown to an event with attendance over 100,000. - The festival provides a significant economic boost to the area, with a recent analysis showing it generates over $9 million in revenue for downtown San Jose and between 800 and 1,000 paid room nights for local hotels. - Befitting its Silicon Valley location, the festival integrates technology into its programming, having rebranded to include Virtual Reality in 2017 and more recently hosting an "AI Day" featuring a town hall with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. - One of the festival's highest honors is the Maverick Spirit Award, which recognizes visionary artists; past recipients include Harrison Ford, Spike Lee, Jennifer Jason Leigh, J.J. Abrams, and Sir Ian McKellen. - While core events take place at downtown San Jose venues like the California Theatre and Hammer Theatre Center, the festival has expanded to include screenings in Mountain View at the Alamo Drafthouse. - For independent filmmakers, the festival is a notable launching point for securing distribution deals with companies such as Netflix, Amazon, HBO, and Lionsgate. - The 2026 festival will screen 268 new films from 44 different countries, a lineup that includes 123 world and U.S. premieres.
