In a strategic move against competitors, Google DeepMind hired the CEO and key engineers from the startup Windsurf. The "reverse acquihire" signals an intensifying war for top AI talent, placing a premium on engineers with both deep technical and leadership experience.
The deal for Windsurf's top talent wasn't Google's first choice; it was a strategic rebound. OpenAI was reportedly in talks to acquire the AI coding startup for $3 billion, but the deal collapsed. This opened the door for Google to secure CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen for its DeepMind division. The $2.4 billion price tag wasn't for the company itself, but primarily for a non-exclusive license to Windsurf's AI coding technology and the expertise of its key leaders. This "reverse acquihire" allows Google to integrate the talent into its Gemini platform while Windsurf continues to operate independently under an interim CEO. The remaining 250 employees and the company itself were later acquired by Cognition, the startup behind the AI software engineer Devin. Windsurf, originally founded as Exafunction Inc. in 2021, had a history of rapid pivots. The company, started by MIT graduates Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, initially focused on GPU virtualization before shifting to AI-powered developer tools and creating an AI-native IDE that attracted over a million users. This talent grab is a key move in the escalating AI wars, where specialized engineers and researchers are valued like star athletes. Tech giants are increasingly using massive compensation packages and novel deal structures, like licensing agreements, to acquire top minds without triggering regulatory scrutiny that comes with full acquisitions. Other recent examples include Microsoft's $650 million deal with Inflection AI and Meta's multi-billion dollar investment in Scale AI to bring on its CEO.
