California State Parks tighten reservation rules

California State Parks changed how campsite reservations are canceled and refunded for arrivals on or after July 1, 2026, according to the department’s booking rules. The new policy reduces refunds for late cancellations, eliminates refunds for cancellations made less than two days before the reservation start, and treats no-shows the same way. California State Parks says the “reservation start” is 12:00 p.m. on the arrival date, not the posted campground check-in time. That means a Friday reservation must be canceled by 12:00 p.m. on the previous Friday to qualify for a full refund of site fees, minus the cancellation fee. California State Parks says reservations are held until 12:00 p.m. on the day after the reservation start date. If the camper has not arrived by then, and has not resolved the issue with the park, the booking can be treated as a no-show and released. California State Parks said in its FAQ that the new policies were adopted because state parks are in high demand and some campsites have gone unused.
