Broadcom Crushes Q1 on AI Boom

Broadcom beat Q1 FY26 expectations with EPS $2.05 (vs $2.02 est) and revenue $19.31B (vs $19.14B est). AI revenue hit $8.4B, up 106% year-over-year. Company guided above consensus views. Target also beat Q4 EPS at $2.44 despite slight revenue miss.

The surge in AI-related revenue to $8.4 billion was fueled by strong demand for Broadcom's custom AI accelerators and advanced networking products, which are crucial components in data centers. CEO Hock Tan noted that this demand is accelerating, with the company securing a sixth major customer for its custom AI chips. Looking ahead, Broadcom projects its momentum will continue, forecasting second-quarter revenue of approximately $22 billion. The company anticipates its AI semiconductor revenue alone will climb to $10.7 billion in the next quarter, which would mark a 140% increase year-over-year. Beyond the immediate future, CEO Hock Tan has given investors a "line of sight" to annual AI chip sales potentially exceeding $100 billion by 2027. This outlook is bolstered by significant orders from major AI players, including a confirmed $21 billion order from Anthropic and a new partnership with OpenAI expected to ramp up in 2027. While the semiconductor business soars, Broadcom's infrastructure software segment, now centered around the VMware acquisition, contributed $6.8 billion in revenue. The integration of VMware has been a financial success, boosting software revenue and operating margins, though the strategy has involved shifting customers to higher-priced subscription bundles. The strong earnings report prompted a more than 5% jump in Broadcom's stock in after-hours trading. This came after a period of underperformance, as the stock had been down over 8% year-to-date amid broader concerns about a potential AI bubble and the impact of the AI product mix on profit margins. Broadcom's success is tightly linked to its role as a key supplier for major tech companies' AI ambitions. It has a long-standing partnership with Google to help build its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and also supplies custom silicon to Meta for its own AI initiatives.
