Glasgow Creates Wild Butterfly Spaces

Dozens of new wild spaces are being created in Glasgow specifically to attract butterflies, moths, and wildlife, with the project rolling out in schools to engage students in planting and habitat-building. This initiative provides an inspiring model for creating pollinator-friendly gardens at home. The program encourages participation in habitat creation and biodiversity support.

The "Wild Spaces" initiative in Glasgow is a £250,000 two-year project led by the charity Butterfly Conservation in partnership with Glasgow City Council. It builds on a successful similar project in Perth and Stirling which engaged over 1,000 people and created 20 new habitats for butterflies and moths. The goal is to create more than 40 new wildlife havens across the city. The project will establish 15 Wild Spaces in public parks, including Penilee Park and Richmond Park, 13 in schools, and will support 20 community hubs in creating their own. This initiative is a direct response to the decline of common butterflies and moths across the UK, aiming to bolster their populations by creating vital habitats in urban areas, which constitute over a fifth of Glasgow's total area. While overall butterfly numbers in Scotland have seen an increase over the last four decades, several species are in significant decline. The project's planting strategy will directly address this by cultivating specific larval food plants for threatened species. For instance, creating patches of Common and Sheep's Sorrel will support the declining Small Copper butterfly, while grasses like fescues will provide for the Grayling, and nettles will be left for the Small Tortoiseshell. The educational component of the project will engage students in 13 schools through activities modeled on Butterfly Conservation's "Munching Caterpillars" program. Pupils will participate directly in creating the new habitats, taking part in bug hunts, learning to survey butterflies, and planting both nectar sources for adult butterflies and specific food plants for their caterpillars.
