A Missouri man is missing while hiking the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, prompting search and rescue efforts [https://www.atlantanewsfirst.com/2026/03/11/missouri-man-goes-missing-appalachian-trail-georgia/].
The missing hiker has been identified as a man from Missouri. Search and rescue teams are currently on the ground in Georgia, focusing on the area where he was last known to be. This incident is not isolated, as another hiker, Charles Hosch, an SMU Law professor, went missing on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia in November 2025. A large-scale search operation for Hosch is planned for March 14 and 15. Hosch was last seen on November 11, 2025, near Blood Mountain. The terrain in that area is particularly challenging for search efforts due to dense brush, thick rhododendron cover, boulders, cliffs, and rocky outcroppings. The Union County Sheriff's office requested that hikers avoid the Blood Mountain area during the search for Hosch in November due to congestion. Anyone with information regarding Hosch or who was near the Byron Herbert Reece Trailhead on November 11 should contact the sheriff's Emergency Operations Center.
