Anthropic inks $10B compute deal

- Anthropic struck a roughly $10 billion compute contract on August 4 with cloud startup Volta Infra to secure capacity for Claude and future AI work. (finance.yahoo.com) - The agreement runs six years and uses a 133-megawatt Norway data center with Nvidia Vera Rubin chips, in partnership with Bitdeer Technologies. (finance.yahoo.com) - Volta said August 4 it raised $300 million at a $2.4 billion valuation; Anthropic and Bitdeer declined comment. (finance.yahoo.com)

Anthropic has agreed to buy about $10 billion of computing capacity from Volta Infra Holdings, a months-old cloud infrastructure startup, according to people familiar with the matter. The six-year agreement gives the Claude maker access to a Norway data center that Volta is developing with Bitdeer Technologies Group, a bitcoin miner that operates data centers. (finance.yahoo.com) Volta said on August 4 that it had signed a $10 billion deal with an unnamed AI lab, and multiple reports identified Anthropic as the customer. Anthropic and Bitdeer declined to comment, while Volta Chief Executive Ricard Boada did not name the client publicly. ### Who is Anthropic buying this capacity from? (finance.yahoo.com) Volta Infra Holdings was founded in January by former Brookfield Asset Management executives, according to Bloomberg’s report carried by Yahoo Finance. The company leases AI capacity and helps customers finance large chip purchases, and on August 4 it said it had raised $300 million in venture funding at a $2.4 billion valuation. Nvidia is tied to the project through both hardware and ecosystem. Volta is part of Nvidia’s cloud partner program, and the Norway site is set to use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems, according to TechCrunch and the Bloomberg report. (finance.yahoo.com) ### What exactly is Anthropic getting in the deal? The Norway facility will provide 133 megawatts of capacity, Volta said. Bitdeer is helping develop the site and will deliver the infrastructure alongside Volta under the six-year contract. The agreement is one more piece of a broader Anthropic effort to line up chips, power and data-center access across several partners. (finance.yahoo.com) Anthropic said in April that it had signed a separate agreement with Google and Broadcom for multiple gigawatts of next-generation TPU capacity starting in 2027, and said Amazon remained its primary cloud provider and training partner. (finance.yahoo.com) ### Why is Anthropic signing another large compute contract? Anthropic has been adding infrastructure as demand for Claude grows. In its April announcement, the company said annualized run-rate revenue had surpassed $30 billion and that the number of business customers spending more than $1 million a year had risen above 1,000. (finance.yahoo.com) The company has also made earlier long-term commitments with other providers. Nvidia said in November 2025 that Anthropic had committed to purchase $30 billion of Azure compute capacity and to contract additional capacity of up to 1 gigawatt, with Microsoft and Nvidia also investing in Anthropic. (anthropic.com) ### Why does Bitdeer matter here? Bitdeer brings data-center operating experience from crypto mining. Bloomberg’s report said the company is among miners converting part of their footprint from bitcoin mining to AI applications, and cited Bitdeer’s July 21 operational update on plans to convert some crypto sites in Texas, Tennessee and Washington state. (anthropic.com) The Norway project shows how AI demand is pulling in newer suppliers alongside established cloud companies. In addition to deals with Google, Broadcom, Microsoft and Amazon, reports said Anthropic recently signed computing agreements with SpaceX, Advanced Micro Devices and Akamai, and has also discussed leasing capacity from Meta Platforms. (blogs.nvidia.com) ### What comes next for the companies involved? Volta said on August 4 that the six-year contract will be delivered from the Norway site, and Anthropic is expected to use that capacity for Claude products and research workloads as the infrastructure comes online. Anthropic has also said its Google-Broadcom TPU expansion is expected to begin in 2027, giving the company another named milestone in its broader build-out.
