Salmon Sold at BJ's Recalled for Listeria Risk
Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. has recalled a lot of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products were sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club. The FDA is urging consumers to check their products and follow recall instructions.
The specific product recalled is lot number 3896 of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon, sold in 2-pound bags. The UPC code for the affected item is 888670025963, which can be found on the reverse side of the packaging. This recalled salmon was sold exclusively at BJ's Wholesale Club stores in seven states: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The period of sale for the affected lot was from January 31 through February 7, 2026. The potential contamination was discovered after a random sample collected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration tested positive for the bacteria. Waltham, Massachusetts-based Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. is investigating the source of the contamination and, as of the recall announcement, no illnesses had been reported. *Listeria monocytogenes* is a bacterium that can survive and grow even in refrigerated conditions. While healthy individuals may only experience short-term symptoms like fever, diarrhea, and nausea, the infection can be far more serious for others. For pregnant women, listeria infection can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, or life-threatening infections in newborns. The illness also poses a significant risk to adults over 65 and individuals with weakened immune systems, who may develop severe complications like bloodstream infections or meningitis. Symptoms of a more severe listeria infection, known as invasive listeriosis, can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. These symptoms may appear up to two weeks after consuming the contaminated food. BJ's Wholesale Club is in the process of directly notifying members who may have purchased the recalled product. Consumers who have the affected salmon are advised not to eat it and can call 1-888-628-0730 for instructions on how to obtain a full refund.
