NVIDIA enables SAP enterprise agents

- NVIDIA and SAP said on May 12, 2026, they integrated NVIDIA OpenShell with SAP Business AI Platform for governed enterprise AI agents. - SAP said OpenShell will serve as the runtime security layer for SAP AI agents, adding isolated execution, policy enforcement and infrastructure-level containment. - SAP Sapphire sessions and SAP News Center posts published May 12-13 detail Joule Studio, SAP Business AI Platform and NVIDIA’s OpenShell integration.

NVIDIA and SAP used SAP Sapphire in Orlando on May 12 to lay out how they want enterprise AI agents to move from demos into production systems. SAP said it is integrating NVIDIA OpenShell into the SAP Business AI Platform, while NVIDIA described OpenShell as an open-source runtime built to add security, privacy and governance controls around autonomous agents. The companies tied the work to SAP’s finance, procurement and supply-chain workflows, where agents would need to operate inside business systems rather than in isolated test environments. SAP said the integration is aimed at making those agents safe, governable and auditable inside existing enterprise controls. ### What exactly did NVIDIA and SAP announce? SAP said on May 12 that its new SAP Business AI Platform would be the company’s unified environment for building, contextualizing and governing AI agents across its software stack. In the same announcement, SAP said it was deepening partnerships with NVIDIA and other technology vendors as part of what it called the “Autonomous Enterprise.” (news.sap.com) NVIDIA said in a May 12 blog post that OpenShell will function inside SAP Business AI Platform as the runtime security layer for SAP AI agents, including custom agents built in Joule Studio. SAP, in a separate post, said the collaboration is not framed as SAP adopting a third-party runtime wholesale, but as a technical integration to define how enterprise-grade agent execution should work inside SAP environments. (news.sap.com) ### What is OpenShell supposed to do inside SAP systems? NVIDIA’s documentation describes OpenShell as a runtime for autonomous AI agents that runs them in sandboxed environments designed to protect data, credentials and infrastructure. NVIDIA’s product page says each session is sandboxed, resources are metered and permissions are checked by the runtime before execution. NVIDIA said the SAP integration adds isolated execution environments, policy enforcement at the filesystem and network layers, and infrastructure-level containment if agent logic fails. (blogs.nvidia.com) SAP used similar language, saying enterprise agents must be safe, governable and auditable by design before customers can trust them in core workflows. ### Why are finance, procurement and supply-chain workflows the focus? (docs.nvidia.com) SAP said the Autonomous Enterprise effort is aimed at “the world’s most critical business workflows,” and its Sapphire materials place AI agents inside line-of-business processes rather than general-purpose chat interfaces. CIO Dive, summarizing SAP’s announcements, reported that SAP Business AI Platform and the related autonomous suite are meant to support enterprise AI deployment on top of SAP’s business data foundation. (blogs.nvidia.com) SAP’s own framing centers on agents that can execute work across business functions with controls attached. That matters in areas such as procurement approvals, finance operations and supply-chain actions, where an agent may need access to systems, files, networks and credentials and where errors can affect orders, payments or inventory records. NVIDIA’s description of containment and policy enforcement addresses that execution layer rather than only model performance. (news.sap.com) ### How does this fit with NVIDIA’s broader agent push? NVIDIA introduced OpenShell publicly in March at GTC 2026 as part of what it called an open agent development platform. NVIDIA’s March 16 press release said OpenShell and related agent software were intended for autonomous, self-evolving enterprise AI agents, and named SAP among software companies advancing enterprise agents with NVIDIA tooling. (blogs.nvidia.com) NVIDIA has since described OpenShell in other enterprise partnerships, including with ServiceNow and Adobe, as the control layer that secures agent actions at runtime. In SAP’s case, the emphasis is narrower and more operational: governed execution for agents working inside enterprise application flows already used by finance, procurement and supply-chain teams. ### Where can customers see the next step? (investor.nvidia.com) SAP published its Sapphire announcement on May 12 and a follow-up explainer on May 13 through its News Center, outlining how SAP Business AI Platform, Joule Studio and NVIDIA OpenShell fit together. NVIDIA also published a May 12 post describing the runtime controls and linked OpenShell documentation for developers. Those materials are the clearest public record so far of how the companies say the integration will be implemented and where customers can track the rollout. (blogs.nvidia.com) (news.sap.com)
