Microsoft Details End-of-Support for Windows 10 IoT

Microsoft has outlined its Extended Security Update (ESU) options for the 2016 Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) editions of Windows 10 IoT Enterprise. The operating system is scheduled to reach its end-of-support date later this year. After the final update, deployed devices in enterprise fleets, such as those in logistics and retail, will no longer receive security patches without an ESU plan.

- The official end-of-support date for both Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2016 LTSB is October 13, 2026. After this date, these operating systems will no longer receive security updates, non-security updates, or bug fixes. - For devices that cannot be immediately upgraded, Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for up to three years. Unlike the ESU for the standard Enterprise edition, which has a per-device cost starting at $61 for the first year, the ESU for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2016 LTSB is only available through the device's original equipment manufacturer (OEM). - The ESU program provides only "critical" and "important" security updates and does not include new features, quality fixes, or design changes. Technical support under the ESU plan is limited to the activation and installation of the security updates. - The recommended migration path is to a newer Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release. For hardware that meets the requirements, Microsoft suggests Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024; otherwise, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 is the suggested alternative. - The subsequent version, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, offers a significantly longer support lifecycle, with extended support available until January 2032. This version also introduced features like soft real-time capabilities and the ability to run Linux workloads using Azure IoT Edge. - Continuing to operate devices on the 2016 LTSB version after the end-of-life date without an ESU plan introduces significant security risks from unpatched vulnerabilities and can create compliance challenges with standards like PCI DSS and GDPR.
