Canva faces AI choice

- Industry observers are debating whether Canva should build its own AI stack or license external models as it expands generative features. - A newsletter dubbed the situation the 'Canva hangover', arguing the company must decide to own intelligence or rent it. - That strategic choice will shape whether Canva becomes a fast-deployment brand layer or stays dependent on external model providers. Canva is no longer just plugging outside artificial intelligence into a design app. By April 2026, it had launched Canva AI 2.0 on top of its own Canva Design Model. (canva.com) That shift followed a hybrid phase. At Canva Create in May 2025, the company said Canva AI combined its in-house models, Leonardo.Ai’s Phoenix image model, partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic, and Canva’s own template and content library. (canva.com) Canva had already moved toward owning more of the stack in July 2024, when it acquired Leonardo.Ai. In December 2024, Canva said it had started integrating Leonardo’s Phoenix model into Magic Studio, beginning with Dream Lab, its image generator launched in October 2024. (canva.com) The basic issue is control. A licensed model can get a feature to market fast, but a model built for design can understand layers, layout, hierarchy, and brand rules instead of producing a flat image that has to be rebuilt by hand. (canva.com) Canva made that case explicit in late 2025, when it introduced its Creative Operating System and said the Canva Design Model was a “design-aware” system built to understand real-world design structure. On April 15, 2026, the company said that model now powers fully layered, editable output from a single prompt. (canva.com 1) (canva.com 2) The stakes are large because Canva is already operating at platform scale. The company said it reached 220 million monthly users in 2024, 260 million monthly users and $3.5 billion in revenue in 2025, and usage across Magic Studio had passed 16 billion by May 2025. (canva.com 1) (canva.com 2) (canva.com 3) Canva is also widening the product around that model. In 2025 it added Canva Code, AI-powered Canva Sheets, a rebuilt Photo Editor, and later a Creative Operating System that tied design, collaboration, publishing, and performance together. (canva.com 1) (canva.com 2) The company is pushing further into marketing workflows as well. Canva said in June 2025 it would buy MagicBrief, an ad-analytics startup, as it tried to connect creative production with performance data inside the same product. (cnbc.com) Outside partners have not disappeared. Canva announced a new chapter in its Anthropic collaboration in April 2026, days after unveiling Canva AI 2.0, which suggests the company is still mixing proprietary systems with third-party models where they add reach or capability. (marketwatch.com) (canva.com) So the “build or rent” debate has partly been answered by Canva’s own product roadmap. It is still buying and licensing technology, but it has spent the last 21 months moving the core intelligence closer to home. (canva.com) (canva.com) (canva.com)
