AI-Native B2B Tools Gain Traction with Startups
A new wave of AI-native B2B platforms is emerging to help startups automate core functions. Tools like Lightfield's AI-powered CRM, MaxContact's automation agents with retrievable memory, and Merge's unified API for data integration are allowing smaller teams to leapfrog legacy systems and build smarter workflows from day one.
The new breed of AI-native B2B tools represents a fundamental architectural shift. Instead of bolting AI features onto legacy databases, companies like Lightfield are building their systems from the ground up on unstructured data like emails and call transcripts, allowing AI to derive structure and context organically. This "customer memory first, pipeline second" approach aims to eliminate the manual data entry that has plagued CRMs for decades. Lightfield's founders, Keith Peiris and Henri Liriani, previously led the presentation tool Tome, which raised $81M from investors including Coatue and Greylock at a $300M valuation. They pivoted after realizing the core problem for sales teams wasn't slide creation, but a lack of accessible customer history. Lightfield targets startups with 1-50 employees, aiming to replace hours of daily CRM admin with automated summaries and follow-ups. MaxContact's AI agents are designed to handle high-volume, repetitive interactions across various channels like voice, SMS, and webchat, allowing human agents to focus on more complex customer issues. Their platform can automate tasks like payment reminders, lead qualification, and appointment booking, with many clients seeing a positive ROI within the first quarter. The system uses technologies like OpenAI for language processing and Deepgram for speech-to-text to enable more natural, human-like interactions. Merge is tackling the integration challenge for B2B companies with its unified API platform. For a startup, building individual integrations to dozens of HR, accounting, or CRM systems is a massive engineering drain. Merge allows developers to integrate once to offer a full category of connections to their customers, saving significant time and resources. Customers like Ramp and Calendly use Merge to connect with hundreds of platforms across categories like HRIS, ATS, and CRM.
