Act No.1 Pushes Fashion Boundaries
Fresh off its LVMH Prize semifinalist nod, fashion label Act No.1 unveiled a Fall 2026 collection full of sculptural forms and deconstructed looks. Designer Luca Lin's experimental approach blurs the line between streetwear and conceptual art, emphasizing bold self-expression.
The Milan-based label was founded in 2016 by the creative duo Luca Lin and Galib Gassanoff. The brand's name, Act No.1, is a reference to their own childhoods, the first act of their lives, which serves as a primary source of inspiration. Their designs are a reflection of their multicultural backgrounds, blending Chinese fine art with Azerbaijani craftsmanship. Act No. 1 is recognized for its "hybrid" garments, which often merge two distinct pieces into one, such as a shirt attached to a t-shirt or a skirt combined with pants. This design approach is complemented by the use of landscape prints and dramatic tulle embellishments, which have become signatures of the brand since its Spring/Summer 2020 collection. The brand uses its platform to address social issues, with a focus on inclusivity and the condition of women globally. Their iconic ruffle jacket was designed as a statement against child marriage, aiming to bring visibility to the issue. This commitment to social commentary is woven into their collections, which are designed to be thought-provoking and activist-driven. Act No. 1 has garnered significant attention within the fashion industry, leading to a collaboration with Valentino, which supported their Spring/Summer 2023 show by livestreaming it on its own Instagram platform. The label has also been worn by a host of celebrities, including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Lizzo, and Dua Lipa. In 2025, Luca Lin was also a finalist for the International Woolmark Prize.
