India's Startup Ecosystem Reaches 2 Lakh
India is now home to over two lakh startups, making it the world's third-largest startup ecosystem, according to Science Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. The minister highlighted the milestone as a key indicator of the country's growing innovation landscape.
The surge in startups is a direct result of the "Startup India" initiative launched in 2016, which saw the number of government-recognized startups skyrocket from around 500 to over 1.59 lakh by early 2025. This ecosystem is now reportedly creating over 21 lakh jobs, with more than 50 new startups being recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) every day. To fuel this growth, the government established a ₹10,000 crore Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), managed by SIDBI, which invests in venture capital funds that in turn support startups. Additionally, the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) provides early-stage financial assistance through approved incubators, with a corpus of ₹945 crore. A significant shift is underway beyond major metropolitan hubs, with over 50% of recognized startups now emerging from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. This demonstrates a nationwide entrepreneurial expansion into smaller cities, driven by lower operational costs and access to untapped local talent. India is the world's third-largest hub for "unicorns"—startups valued at over $1 billion—trailing only the United States and China. The country is home to over 100 unicorns with a combined valuation exceeding $220 billion. This growth shows increasing diversity, with over 45% of startups having at least one woman director. As of late 2024, more than 73,000 recognized startups included at least one female director, highlighting a significant rise in women's entrepreneurship. The government is also actively integrating startups into public procurement through the GeM Startup Runway on the Government e-Marketplace. This initiative gives startups direct access to government buyers, with over 34,800 startups already onboarded and receiving orders worth thousands of crores.
