Doctor Foster Final Season Confirmed

The BBC's psychological thriller "Doctor Foster" is returning for a third and final series, nine years after its original debut. Suranne Jones returns for the conclusion of the razor-sharp exploration of betrayal and obsession that "gripped the UK." The show's return marks a major event in British TV, reuniting fans with Jones's acclaimed lead performance.

The show's creator, Mike Bartlett, was inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Medea, a sorceress who seeks revenge on her unfaithful husband. This classical inspiration is reflected in Gemma Foster's own calculated and often destructive quest for vengeance after discovering her husband's affair. For her role as Gemma, Suranne Jones won the BAFTA for Best Actress. The first series, which aired in 2015, captivated audiences with a dinner party scene that became a major talking point. In the scene, Gemma calmly exposes her husband Simon's affair with the much younger Kate to Kate's unsuspecting parents. The second series, set two years later, explored the fallout of their divorce and Simon's return to their town with Kate and their young child. The series two finale in 2017 ended on a significant cliffhanger, with Gemma and Simon's traumatized teenage son, Tom, running away from his warring parents. His disappearance came after a series of escalating and psychologically damaging events between Gemma and Simon. The final season is set to pick up a decade after these events. The upcoming five-part final season will see Gemma on the verge of a new life and about to remarry. However, the return of her now-adult son Tom, along with shadows from the past, threatens her newfound happiness. Both Suranne Jones and writer Mike Bartlett have stated that the time jump was necessary to allow Tom to return as a young man with questions for his parents. Filming for the new series is scheduled to begin in the spring.
