TSMC Accelerates New AI-Focused Fab

TSMC is accelerating construction of a new fabrication plant in Tainan, now aiming for a 2028 completion date. The push is driven by overwhelming demand for AI accelerators and advanced logic chips, reinforcing the hardware boom fueled by the AI industry.

While TSMC has not officially named the process for the new Tainan fab, the 2028 production timeline aligns perfectly with its next-generation A14 node. This 1.4nm-class technology is slated for mass production in 2028 and promises a 25-30% reduction in power consumption or a 10-15% performance gain over the 2nm process it will succeed. This expansion isn't just about logic; it's intrinsically linked to advanced packaging. The insatiable demand for AI hardware has created a bottleneck in TSMC's CoWoS (Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate) packaging capacity, essential for integrating high-bandwidth memory with GPUs. Projections show global CoWoS demand reaching 1 million wafers by 2026, with Nvidia alone expected to consume around 60% of that supply. The Tainan fab is part of a broader global and domestic manufacturing strategy. In Taiwan, TSMC is already building 2nm fabs in Hsinchu and Kaohsiung and planning the A14 facility in Taichung. Concurrently, the company is accelerating its Arizona, USA "megafab cluster," moving up the production schedule for its second fab to the latter half of 2027 due to strong demand from American clients. This aggressive roadmap is set against a competitive backdrop. Intel is pushing to reclaim process leadership with its 18A (1.8nm) node, which features RibbonFET gate-all-around transistors and PowerVia backside power delivery. Intel's 18A entered risk production in early 2025 and is slated for high-volume manufacturing in late 2025 or early 2026. Meanwhile, Samsung plans to start 2nm mass production in the second half of 2025 and has begun sampling its 2nm Exynos 2700 processor. However, reports suggest its new 2nm-capable plant in Texas may see delays, potentially pushing full-scale operations to early 2027.
